You Will Do Even Greater Things Than This
Welcome to the first blog entry for Axis of Awesome Living! This venture is a dream I didn’t realize I was holding. It is so beautiful how divinely guided we are and even more so when our eyes are open to it.
I’d like to riff a bit on The Gospel of John, chapter 14. As Jesus sends the Disciples off to their service, he is quoted as saying, “You will do even greater things than these.” So much of Scripture has been interpreted my white European Men. There is certainly room for the influence of Spirit, but the end of the day it was the men who pieced things together, decided which stories would go where and what would be added or deleted to support the continuity of the story.
This isn’t a post about Jesus, it is a post about what Jesus was attempting to teach us. We are the divine, we are individually sacred divinity. We are majestic, powerful, creative and beloved. If we could only know that to our core, we would surely do way more beautiful, powerful, spectacular things than Jesus was able to accomplish as one being on the planet.
This story reminded me of my entry into the service of Christian Educator. For thirty years, I engaged in all things children and families within the church educational system. Part of my duty was to train the volunteer Sunday School teachers each year. The core value I emphasized over everything else was this, “every child is told too often they aren’t something. They aren’t doing the work correctly, they talk too much or too little, they are not following directions or being a distraction, making a mess or not being attentive. The list is never ending. We know this because we all have had this experience in one way or another.
But when any child, walk through the door of whatever church I was serving it was my ultimate goal that they would know, they are perfect exactly the way that they are. That we would not judge them, or provoke them, criticize them or discourage them. We would honor the sacredness of who they are because they existed and we were honored to be in relationship with them.
This is what Jesus was speaking about and living. The Biblical language is more floral in flare, it is more complicated and creatively interesting perhaps, but at its core, Jesus message was this: We are perfect creations. If we would only embody that divinity that is us, that sacred, set apartness, wouldn’t life be spectacular?
Have you thought about it? Do you feel it? Can you look in the mirror and know you are sacred for no other reason than that you are here? Can you look at those around you and know you are surrounded by the sacredness of existence? Is it possible to live out of that space?
When we hold our head high, look straight ahead, feel into our heart space, and breathe, yes, we will do even greater things than this.
You are the miracle you have been waiting for. May you live it, experience it, breathe it and be it.
